Our vision is to be London’s leading housing organisation with residents who love where they live and staff who love where they work and what we do.

We’re a hugely diverse organisation with over 1,000 staff doing all kinds of jobs. 

People from very different backgrounds, with varied outlooks, from all over the world work for us – this makes us stronger and more able to help the wide range of residents that we serve.

What we mean by ED&I

Equality We recognise that treating everyone in the same way does not necessarily mean that everyone is treated fairly. 

To make sure we create equal opportunities, we understand that people have different needs that require different responses.

Diversity We recognise and respect that people are different. Everyone has unique experiences, values, ways of thinking, behaviours, ways of communicating and working. We value these differences.

Inclusion We know an environment where our residents and staff feel included and able to be themselves will help people reach their potential.

What you can expect from us

We act with integrity and openness in what we do. Here are some of the ways that we commit to this.

  • Fair selection

    At NHH we focus on ensuring our selection processes are fair, robust and appropriate.  Our managers leading recruitment campaigns receive training so that they fully understand NHH’s commitment to ED&I and their responsibilities in the selection process.

  • Equal pay for equal work

    We pay an honest wage to our staff and believe in equal pay for equal work.  We review equal pay periodically and benchmark our salaries externally.

  • Disability confident employer

    In 2017, we attained certification as a Disability Confident Employer, replacing our previous accreditation as a Two Ticks Employer.  Throughout the selection process, and into employment, we are committed to considering reasonable adjustments and working with staff to ensure they are supported at work.

    Our three main offices are accessible, and we regularly make reasonable adjustments to support candidates in our recruitment processes.

  • ED&I strategy group

    We believe that it’s important to involve staff in important initiatives. Our ED&I Strategy Group is our staff group who champion ED&I issues for NHH staff and residents.

  • Housing sector staff networks

    We can achieve more in partnership than we can do alone and think it’s important to provide staff with the opportunity to connect with others. 

    We’re members of groups external to NHH such as the London Diversity Group, the Housing Diversity Network and HouseProud. Internally we have established networks and programmes for progression, and have plans to do more in the future.

  • NHH staff networks

    Our internal staff networks aim to ensure that various issues are addressed in the development of corporate diversity and employment policies, and are part of wider housing sector networks. 

    LGBT+ network

    Members include staff who represent a variety of sexual and gender identities and who want to show support for the rights of their LGBT+ colleagues.

    The NHH group is part of the wider HouseProud network. Working across the housing sector, it provides a supportive environment for LGBT+ staff to meet with others at peer organisations.

    BAME network

    NHH’s Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) group is focused on expanding opportunities at all levels. The group works to support career progression, increase involvement in mentoring, celebrate BAME culture and achievements, and encourage internal and external networking. The NHH group is part of a collaborative BAME network across the housing sector, coming together with peer organisations to provide a wider partnership community.

  • Housing diversity network mentoring programme

    For many years NHH has been involved in the Housing Diversity Network’s mentoring programme.  With a key role as a member of the London steering group, we champion the value of the opportunities this programme provides our staff, whether they’re taking part as a mentors or mentees.

Investors in people

In 2016, we gained the Investors in People Gold Award, recognising that “employees at all levels are proud of their organisation and what it stands for”.

Our Assessor said of our culture:

People commend the cheerful and supportive atmosphere that is attributed to the openness and trust that exists between leaders and employees throughout NHH. People feel that this is a key improvement over the past three years when people feel that the organisation made a concerted effort to ensure a culture of openness, responsibility and trust.”

Wellbeing at work

We want our staff to love where they work.  Part of that is ensuring that we have good employment benefits such as a health cash plan, free exercise classes and wellbeing led initiatives such as a 24-hour employee assistance line.

Flexibility

We're committed to being a flexible employer in order to help our staff balance their work/life commitments.  We support flexible working requests and are implementing changes to our offices and technology to support our staff to work as efficiently as possible.

We have a range of family friendly policies such as enhanced payments for maternity, paternity and adoption leave (qualifying periods may apply).
